Faces of Roger Bacon
Class of 2028
Sophomore Greta Huber knew the day she shadowed Roger Bacon that it possessed just the school community she was looking for. As an eighth grader at Mercy Montessori, Roger Bacon felt new and exciting, but also just like home. “I loved how kind and generous everyone was. Even as a shadow, I was treated like I was already part of the family,” shares Greta. “I also could see so many opportunities to get involved from sports, to clubs, to travel opportunities. I also liked the idea of being some place that was always giving back to the community.”
At the midway point of her sophomore year, Greta could not be happier with her decision. She is a member of Roger Bacon’s rising girls soccer team, runs track both indoor and outdoor, and is involved in Community Outreach efforts. States Greta, “I really have loved it here. I love the community, because it feels like a family. I love the small class sizes, and how much one-on-one time you get with teachers. You just always feel supported and cared for at Roger Bacon.”
When not at Roger Bacon, Greta participates in the Cincinnati Zoo Teen Program, which aligns with future career interests, and plays indoor soccer.
Although her favorite subject has been Chemistry, Greta’s favorite teacher at Roger Bacon has been Mrs. Welt in the English department. “Mrs. Welt is just so kind, and always so calm. Much like Roger Bacon, her class is a place you can always be yourself, and never worry about being judged.”
Something interesting some many not know about Greta is that she can do a front handspring and “the worm,” although she has not yet broke this out at a Roger Bacon dance.
As we head to Christmas break, she is looking forward to spring semester. “I am looking forward going to games this winter, and track season in the spring. Everyone in the track program is so nice. I am also thinking of playing lacrosse, which always looked like fun,” explains Greta.
In fact, her time on the track team provided one of her favorite “RB Moments” so far. “I dropped the baton in practice, which is always a big ‘no-no’ as we always joke it is supposed to be ‘bad luck.” The coach told me to drop and do push-ups, and as I started I realized everyone was laughing with me, not at me, and that they were just joking around,” shares Greta.” It really just served as an example of how easy it is to be yourself, and always be accepted here.”
Even though she is just a sophomore, Greta has started to think about life after Roger Bacon. “I definitely want to study something like Zoology. I love animals. I don’t necessarily want to be a veterinarian, but want to seek more specialization, and also have the ability to travel, observe, and research different animals,” states Greta. “I also have photography, so being able to document my studies and work, something like National Geographic, is something I would really love. Ohio State has a great Zoology program, so that is probably at the top of my list, but I still have time to figure that out.”
As we are in the midst of recruiting the Class of 2030 to Roger Bacon, Greta offers her advice for those students who are considering Roger Bacon. “Roger Bacon is just a wonderful place. You never feel overshadowed or alone. Teachers challenge you, but area always encouraging you and supporting you, helping you to achieve,” explains Greta. “It is just this great place where you can be yourself everyday, and always be celebrated for being your genuine, true self. I love Roger Bacon!”
