IRA Charitable Rollover

A Tax-Smart Way to Support Roger Bacon High School!

Make an impact today and save on taxes by supporting Roger Bacon High School through your IRA.

A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old and Older
If you’re 70½ or older, you can give any amount (up to $108,000 annually) directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like Roger Bacon High School—without paying income taxes on the gift. Whether you contribute a small amount or up to the full limit, your generosity will make a lasting difference in the lives of Spartans. This giving option is known as the IRA Charitable Rollover or a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

Why Consider Making a QCD to Roger Bacon?

  • Your gift will be put to work right away, so you can see the impact it’s having on our students and programs.

  • Starting the year you turn 73, your IRA gift can count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD).

  • You pay no income tax on the donation. It won’t count as taxable income, which means you benefit even if you don’t itemize deductions.

  • Because it lowers your taxable income, a QCD may help reduce your Medicare premiums and the portion of Social Security subject to tax.

For Those 59½ Years Old or Older
If you’re at least 59½, you can take a distribution from your IRA and then make a gift to Roger Bacon High School without penalty. If you itemize your deductions, you may also qualify for a charitable deduction for the amount of your gift.

At Any Age
Regardless of your age, you can name Roger Bacon High School as a beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA. After your lifetime, the designated amount will pass to us tax-free—a simple yet powerful way to leave a legacy. Just contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form or download one from your provider’s website.

A Helpful Tip:
It’s important to let us know if you’ve included Roger Bacon in your plans. Most IRA administrators aren’t required to notify us of your gift, nor do they track whether your wishes are fulfilled. By informing us, we can ensure your intentions are honored and take the opportunity to thank you for your generosity and lasting impact on the future of Roger Bacon. IRA Charitable Rollover: Frequently Asked Questions

Support Roger Bacon High School through your IRA

I’m turning 70½ soon. Can I make my gift to Roger Bacon now?

Not quite yet. You must already be 70½ years old on the date you make the gift for it to qualify.

I have multiple retirement accounts, including pensions and IRAs. Does it matter which one I use?

Yes, it does. Only traditional IRAs are eligible for direct charitable transfers under current law. If your funds are in a 401(k), 403(b), pension, or profit-sharing plan, you may be able to roll them over into a traditional IRA and then make the gift to Roger Bacon from there. Please consult your plan administrator to explore your options.

Can my IRA gift count toward my Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?

Absolutely. If you’re 73 or older, your gift can count toward all or part of your RMD for the year.

Do I need to donate my entire IRA to get the tax benefit?

No, not at all. You can give any amount up to $108,000 per year from your IRA. If your IRA balance is larger, you can choose to donate a portion that suits your philanthropic goals.

What is the deadline to make my IRA gift count this year?

Your gift must be received by Roger Bacon High School by December 31 to qualify for this year’s tax benefits. If you’re using an IRA checkbook, be sure the check clears your account before December 31.

Can I give $108,000 to Roger Bacon and another $108,000 to a second charity?

No. The $108,000 annual limit is the total you can give across all charities in a calendar year. However, you can divide that total—for example, giving $54,000 to Roger Bacon and $54,000 to another charity.

My spouse and I want to give more than $108,000. Is that possible?

Yes! If your spouse is also 70½ or older, they can give up to $108,000 from their own IRA, making a combined gift of up to $216,000 as a couple.

Can I use my IRA to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust?

Yes. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a one-time election to donate up to $54,000 (tax-free) from your IRA to fund a life-income gift such as a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity. Some restrictions apply—please contact us for more details and a personalized, no-obligation illustration.

I’ve already named Roger Bacon as the beneficiary of my IRA. What’s the benefit of giving now instead of after my lifetime?

By making a gift now, you can see the impact of your generosity in real time—whether it’s supporting scholarships, campus improvements, or faith formation. You’ll also enjoy the satisfaction of watching your legacy take shape and may even use your IRA gift to fulfill an existing pledge, provided your total annual IRA gift remains within the $108,000 limit.
