Class of 1993
For Abasi Key ’93, success has always been about making a difference in the lives of others. Through a career rooted in education, mentorship, and community service, he has dedicated himself to helping students and families grow, succeed, and thrive.
Today, Abasi serves as a Community and Career Liaison, CISE Advocate, and Head Varsity Track Coach. Throughout his career, he has directly impacted more than 2,500 students and families through supportive services and guidance. His commitment to service has earned him several honors, including Teacher of the Year, the 2015 Community Gem Award (POCWA), the 2025 Impact Award (Queen City Foundation), and the 2026 Praestans Award from Purcell Marian High School. He also completed his doctoral degree in 2026.
Abasi credits Roger Bacon with helping shape the values that continue to guide his life and career. As a student, he was inspired by opportunities to serve others through mentoring, community cleanups, and projects supporting organizations like the Ronald McDonald House. Those experiences sparked a lifelong passion for giving back and building stronger communities.
The relationships he formed at Roger Bacon also left a lasting impact. Abasi especially remembers Coach Dan Starkey, who challenged him to be his best, instilled confidence, and always made time to listen and offer support. He also recalls the encouragement of Coach Benjamin and the many faculty members who invested in his growth, including Mr. Roebel, Mrs. Ramstetter, Mr. Dauterich, Mr. Carey, Mr. Diaz, Bro. Gene, Mr. Grosser, and Coach Rice.
Among his favorite Roger Bacon memories is the excitement of the 1992 football season, along with performing at the Homecoming Pep Rally with classmates Michael Washington and Sean Pittman in front of the entire student body.
When sharing advice with today’s students, Abasi encourages them to stay grounded in faith and service: “Remember to live unselfishly and always keep Jesus Christ first in your life. Always remember to lift as you climb.” He also encourages young people to pursue work they truly care about, believing that passion creates purpose.
Abasi remains grateful for the lifelong friendships he built at Roger Bacon and notes that the Class of 1993 continues to stay connected and support one another. He is also a proud father of three and grandfather of four.
Roger Bacon is proud to celebrate Abasi Key ’93 and the many ways he continues to lead through service, mentorship, and compassion.
