Roger Bacon High School Announces the Dr. Deb Luebbe Assisi Scholar Program

Roger Bacon High School is proud to announce that our distinguished Assisi Scholar Program will henceforth be known as the Dr. Deb Luebbe Assisi Scholar Program.

The Assisi Scholars Program is designed to offer rigorous academic, spiritual and leadership growth. Students will demonstrate their excellence in academics and in other school and community initiatives. Assisi Scholars are a community of learners who challenge and support each other through their high school journey. The Assisi Scholar Program provides a challenging academic curriculum with two culminating experiences - an academic capstone presentation and a pilgrimage to Italy.

Based on the principles embodied in the Roger Bacon Mission Statement, students will develop their “hearts, minds, and bodies in a caring and challenging environment.” Modeled after the values of St. Francis of Assisi and the scholarship of Friar Roger Bacon, a scientist of the thirteenth century, the Program is designed to elicit the talents of our students and demonstrate the Roger Bacon High School philosophy of, “Mens sana in corpore sano” (a sound mind in a sound body.)

Dr. Deb Luebbe, a longtime Roger Bacon faculty member, was instrumental in creating the Assisi Scholar program over fourteen years ago. The program was near and dear to Dr. Luebbe. Though she was never able to go on the pilgrimage with students, she poured her heart and soul into the creation, development and execution of the program - both academically and spiritually. As a result of her efforts, Roger Bacon has sent 189 students on a fully funded pilgrimage to Italy to walk the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare.

School president, Steve Schad said, "We frequently say that Roger Bacon High School was built on the shoulders of giants. Dr. Luebbe was one of those giants."

In honor of Dr. Luebbe and everything she has done for our school community, especially the Assisi Scholar Program, effective May 18, 2025, the Assisi Scholar program will officially be known as the Dr. Deb Luebbe Assisi Scholar Program. We thank Deb and her family for their support of Roger Bacon and its mission for our students.
