In June, RB3 headed to Memphis, TN to perform at the APME conference!
RB3 ‘s first day at the APME conference in Memphis saw the group open the Student Festival as the first performing group! Their hour long clinic including a full set performance and then a critique and rehearsal by industry professionals. The day concluded with a tour of the Smithsonian Museum of American Rock and Soul Music (which included a recreation of the original Sun Studios where Elvis recorded), and a stroll down the famous Beale St. The students did some shopping at the iconic Memphis Music record store, dinner at the rooftop of Famous Alfred’s, desserts at Schwabs Old Fashion Soda Fountain - the oldest original business on Beale, and LIVE local Memphis music.
On the second day, students had a chance to attend presentations from music professionals around the country - including a New York based artist breaking down the form of pop hits, and professors from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Frost School of Music in Miama, and the University of Memphis with discussions on theory, covers vs recreations, arranging, and the “art of the hook”.RB3 performed an outdoor “pop up” show on the University campus, where conference goers and summer students stopped by to hear some great rock music!
The evening ended with a concert featuring bands from Minnesota, Florida, Alabama State University, and the University of Memphis.
Students had a chance to attend presentations from music professionals around the country - including a Louisiana based educator working to revitalize traditional Cajun music and the theory behind reharmonizing songs.RB3 performed another “pop up” show in the main exhibit hall, where conference goers and other bands hung out for an afternoon of rock.
The evening ended with a tour of the famous STAX Studio and Museum, where legends like Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes recorded.
Thanks to our families and parents for the support of these amazing students - and to donors, supporters and alumni, including the SoundBody Jazz Orchestra, for helping RB3 fund this amazing experience!!
