Julie Vehorn Named Recipient of the Joseph A. Kneip Faculty/Staff Distinguished Service Award

Roger Bacon High School is proud to announce that Julie Vehorn has been named the recipient of the Joseph A. Kneip Faculty/Staff Distinguished Service Award, recognizing her outstanding commitment to the school community and her lasting impact on generations of Spartans.

During her 23 years at Roger Bacon, Vehorn has exemplified what it means to be a dedicated educator and servant leader. She has taught a wide range of courses including English, Research, and Business, while also serving as a mentor to new teachers and as the faculty advisor for St. Vincent de Paul. Her influence extends far beyond the classroom, helping to shape both the academic and spiritual life of the school.

As Dean of Academics since 2010, Vehorn has played a pivotal role in advancing Roger Bacon’s academic programs. She has led numerous curriculum initiatives, guided instructional innovation, and worked closely with faculty to ensure that all students are both challenged and supported. Her leadership in redesigning the Assisi Scholar Program reflects her commitment to educating the whole student—mind, body, and spirit—while aligning curriculum with college readiness and school-wide goals.

Vehorn’s passion for education is evident in her work with both students and colleagues. She has facilitated professional development for faculty, coached educators to strengthen instructional practices, and helped implement systems that support data-informed teaching and learning. Her classroom experience is equally impressive, having taught Advanced Placement® English courses for more than a decade with an average student pass rate of 86 percent.

Beyond academics, Vehorn has made a profound impact through her service leadership. Through her work with St. Vincent de Paul, she has guided students in meaningful service opportunities, including operating the school’s thrift store and organizing food drives and outreach efforts for those in need. These experiences have helped instill a spirit of compassion and social responsibility in countless students.

Among her favorite moments at Roger Bacon are the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, AP® Research presentations, and Drama Guild productions—each reflecting the vibrant, mission-driven community she has helped cultivate.

Vehorn credits her love of education to its ability to keep her humble, challenge her to continue learning, and give her hope for the future. Her dedication to lifelong learning is reflected in her extensive professional background, including a Master of Education from Xavier University and ongoing leadership in instructional coaching, curriculum development, and professional learning.

Roger Bacon High School president, Steve Schad said "Julie is truly deserving of this prestigious award. Over the past 23 years, she has been a foundational force behind Roger Bacon’s resurgence—a consummate professional and a deeply trusted colleague. Roger Bacon is undeniably a better place because of her."

Julie is married to Jeff Nienaber and is the proud mother of Zoe Nienaber ’23 and Josh Nienaber ’26.

The Joseph A. Kneip Faculty/Staff Distinguished Service Award honors individuals who embody the mission of Roger Bacon High School through exceptional service, leadership, and commitment. Julie Vehorn’s career stands as a powerful example of these values in action, and her impact will be felt for years to come.
