Harper Mucillo '28 Attends Stanford University's Intensive Law & Trial Program as a Part of the St. Clare Society

Over the summer, sophomore, Harper Mucillo '28 had the incredible opportunity to attend The Intensive Law & Trial Program at Stanford University through the benefit of Roger Bacon's St. Clare Society! The St. Clare Society provides access for student enrichment through the pursuit of unique educational, cultural, and faith-based opportunities by eliminating any financial obstacles that may have otherwise restricted student access.

Harper decided to explore the Intensive Law & Trial Program at Stanford because of her passion and curiosity for the law. The goal of the program is to provide students with academic and career insights into the field of law by allowing them to step into the roles of prosecution and defense legal teams to try a case in the courtroom. Students have the ability to prepare and take their cases to court, grapple with ethical issues, craft oral arguments, question witnesses – all while striving for the ultimate outcome of a courtroom trial simulation. Endorsed by the American Mock Trial Association, the conference combines engaging faculty discussion, analysis of important case studies, real-world guest speakers and enriching off-campus field trips.

Reflecting on her experience, Harper mentioned, "The Intensive Law & Trial program was exactly what I signed up for---lectures from renowned Stanford professors, classes with kids who share the same nerdy passions as me, and a challenging Mock Trial tournament in San Francisco. I truly felt like a college kid, with a dorm room and all. Classes at Stanford Law made me feel like I was in some kind of college movie, learning the ins and outs of Mock Trial from some of the best teachers I've ever had. They perfectly prepared me for tournament day, and thanks to them, I got to bring home the award for Outstanding Witness."

"Of course, not all of it was classes and lectures. The Envision staff had activities laid out for us at the end of every day, ranging from a Jeopardy tournament to a day out in Pier 39 in San Francisco," she said. "I was able to not only improve my skills in Mock Trial, but make new friends from all over the country. I'm so grateful I got to experience this program, and I can't wait to bring what I've learned into Mrs. Heidel's room this Mock season."

Congratulations, Harper on your incredible achievement and recognition!
