Sam Devlin

Class of 2016

Homecoming is defined as a tradition of welcoming back alumni and returning to a place people like to call home. It is Homecoming week, so we thought it fitting to feature our first alumnus as a Face of RB.

Sam Devlin '16, currently at the University of Cincinnati came back to campus to visit Dave Kathman '90 for an education course. "I loved Math in high school and I needed to observe a math teacher. I knew it had to be at RB." Sam knew his path was going to be education. "I just feel that math teachers can make a real impact, especially if they are enthusiastic about the subject."

Sam's decision to join the Spartan Army was a family tradition. "My older siblings came to Roger Bacon and I just knew this was where I was going to go."As a student, Sam was part of many firsts at Roger Bacon. He was an inaugural member of RB3, the Assisi Scholars Program and the Ultimate Frisbee team. Sam also was the Tin Man in the first musical in our renovated Fine Arts Center, The Wiz. All the things Sam did while at Roger Bacon have carried over to his life now. Sam currently plays music for mass at Our Lady of Rosary, is a music minister at St. Ignatius and volunteers as the Assistant Technical Director at McAuley High School. Not only is he excelling outside of the classroom but also in it, "The transition to college has been easy, I was definitely prepared. From good study skills to learning how to be independent I have felt very comfortable in college."

Sam also mentioned the special friendships he made while in high school. "Not only did Roger Bacon prepare me academically but socially. I was home-schooled up through 8th grade. At freshman orientation, I was nervous to transition to high school, but, I made friends the first day who I can say are still some of my best friends today." Sam feels that his experience with students from all over the city gave him a leg up heading off to school, "I am ready for the real world."

Homecoming is not just about returning home, it is about the memories made while you were there. We hope to have many of our alumni come back and visit. Our Spartans are always welcomed with open arms.

Roger Bacon is made up of many faces, different faces. We hope to showcase a wide range of our Spartans as possible. If you would like to nominate a Spartan, past or present, to be featured as a Face of RB please click here.

“The transition to college has been easy, I was definitely prepared.”
