The Roger Bacon Varsity Team wins a bronze medal in the 2009 U.S.A. Underwater Hockey National Championships!

From June 26 to June 29, 2009, the Roger Bacon Varsity Underwater Hockey Team and the Roger Bacon Junior Varsity Team competed in the 2009 U.S.A. Underwater Hockey National Championships at the University of Minnesota.  The RB Varsity Team finished in third place in the “C” Division, behind the University of Illinois and Michigan State University.  In the medal round games on Sunday, the University of Illinois defeated the RB Varsity by a score of 6 to 1.  But then Varsity came back in the bronze medal game and defeated Club Puck from San Jose, California, by a score of 7 to 3.  Club Puck is a premier underwater hockey team in the United States, and this is the first time in the series between Roger Bacon and Club Puck that the Spartans have defeated a Club Puck team.  Varsity’s overall record in the tournament was four wins, five losses, and one tie, with Varsity also defeating Georgia Tech University and Chicago in round robin action.  This tournament also marks the third year in a row where Roger Bacon has brought home medals from the annual National Championships.
The Roger Bacon Junior Varsity also played very well in the national tournament, finishing in 7th place in the “C” Division.
Team Cincinnati, a team made up of the alumni players from Roger Bacon, also played extremely well in the 2009 U.S.A. Underwater Hockey National Championships, finishing in 7th place in the A Division.

The camp ran daily from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Xavier University in the O’Connor Sports Center pool.  Fifteen current junior high students participated and had a lot of fun learning the fundamentals of the sport of underwater hockey.  The Roger Bacon Team looks forward to seeing these students again in the future!
