Students kick off Black History Month with event at The Freedom Center

On Thursday, February 1, a group of students from Mrs. Ochs-Naderer’s junior English classes attended an event at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in downtown Cincinnati. The class has been learning about the Civil Rights Movement while reading the graphic novel March by John Lewis. At the event, researcher and author Calvin Alexander Ramsey shared his work-in-progress film about Green Books—travel books used by African Americans from 1939-1967. Green Books helped African Americans travel safely in the Jim Crow south by listing restaurants, gas stations, and tourist homes where black travelers could safely stop with their families while on the road. Students screened the film and enjoyed discussion and Q&A with Mr. Ramsey.
