Students Attend HOBY Seminar

In June, Corey Kiner and Sam Mumper ‘21 attended the annual Southwest Ohio Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. HOBY is a leadership program that brings high school students from all over the region together to learn and grow as young leaders in their schools and communities. Each year, Roger Bacon nominates two rising juniors to attend the summer seminar.

For Corey, HOBY was a great learning experience, and also an opportunity to push himself out of his normal comfort zone. “Nobody at HOBY knew I was a football player, or anything about my life at Roger Bacon,” Corey said. “People didn’t have any expectations or assumptions about me, and I didn’t know anything about them either, at first. It was great to make friends with people from other schools who I might have never met without this experience.”

HOBY was a valuable experience for Sam, too. She enjoyed the guest speakers, especially Mrs. Diane Latiker, who spoke with the students about her experience founding the youth organization Kids Off The Block.

Sam even got to share some of her talents! “I met another student who likes to sing,” she said. “We sang ‘Lean on Me’ together at the talent show at the end of the week!”
